Abstract

Several factors influence energy demand and consumption in commercial and residential buildings. To enhance energy efficiency, it is crucial to identify the parameters that drive energy use. Different strategies for optimal building operation can be modelled using energy modelling software. This work describes modelling and analysis of a hospital in Visakhapatnam, India, based on real utility bill data, to implement energy-efficient practices. Key parameters considered include energy efficiency ratio (EER), roof and wall insulation, solar heat gain coefficient, thermal transmittance of windows and doors, overhangs and fins, daylight control and building scheduling. These parameters are modelled in e-Quest, an energy simulation software. The model is calibrated to match monthly measured electricity consumption. Finally, recommendations for passive building design aimed at reducing energy consumption are provided. The detailed energy simulation offers insights into potential energy savings related to energy efficiency ratio, insulation materials and thicknesses, shading and fins length, daylight controls and building scheduling.
