Abstract

This research tackles the issue of the treatment of the dye wastewater using catalytic ozonation treatment. In the present study, we synthesized the catalyst comprising oxides of La-Ce-Co nanostructure through the coprecipitation method. Our investigation focuses on the decolourization and removal of RB5 dye. The catalyst was characterized using various methods, including XRD, BET, SEM with EDX and TEM. The catalyst was found to decolourize the dye solution in just 20 min and achieve 80% total organic carbon (TOC) removal in 80 min, which is significantly higher than the 30% TOC removal achieved by ozonation without a catalyst. Several factors, such as the amount of catalyst, solution pH, ozone concentration and initial concentration, were found to affect the ozonation system and corresponding optimum parametric values were found. Furthermore, scavenging experiments were performed using tert-butyl alcohol to know the reaction pathway. The results showed that the indirect reaction with hydroxyl radical is more dominant and a possible reaction mechanism for this system was proposed.
