Abstract
The research aims to shed light on surface water pollution with pathogenic bacteria in Najaf Al-Ashraf Governorate. This was achieved through the results of laboratory analyses of sewage water samples that were collected and analyzed from 40 locations within the study area. Five types of bacteria were identified for four seasons (summer, winter, spring and autumn): Pseudomonas spp. (Pseudomonaceae), Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella spp., Bacillus and Escherichia coli. The study found that concentrations of pathogenic bacteria vary both spatially and temporally. Spatially, they differ from one location to another, and temporally, they vary across seasons. It was also revealed that the majority of the studied sites are not suitable for human use as the water samples exceed the permissible limits.
