Abstract

Traditional festivals in India, particularly Ganesh Chaturthi, have deep cultural significance but pose significant environmental challenges due to the materials used in idol-making and the immersion process. This study investigates the impact of idol immersion during Ganesh Chaturthi on the physico-chemical parameters and planktonic communities in the Adyar estuary, Chennai. Before and after idol immersion, samples were collected to assess changes in temperature, pH, total dissolved solids, salinity, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrate levels and inorganic phosphate concentrations. Additionally, plankton samples were collected to analyze phytoplankton and zooplankton density and diversity. The results indicate significant alterations in physico-chemical parameters post-immersion, with subsequent trends toward restoration. Planktonic communities exhibited fluctuations, suggesting resilience but also potential ecological impacts. Regression analysis highlighted correlations between plankton densities and environmental factors, emphasizing the need for understanding these associations for effective ecosystem management. Overall, this study underscores the importance of sustainable conservation practices to mitigate adverse effects of cultural festivities on coastal ecosystems and ensure long-term ecological integrity.
