Abstract

Road traffic noise levels in and around Puri, Odisha were monitored in 13 places classed as heavy traffic, commercial and silence zones. The noise levels were measured during morning (7-10 am), noon (11 am-2 pm), afternoon (3-6 pm) and evening (7-10 pm) following standard procedures. On the basis of equivalent noise levels, noise maps were developed using ArcGIS 10.0 software. The noise maps show that the afternoon was the most vulnerable hour among the monitoring periods and there was worrying noise exposure in the northern and north-western parts of the city. The results reveal that the noise level in most of the monitoring areas exceeded the CPCB’s prescribed limit. Frequent movements of heavy vehicles, uncontrolled speed, honking, lack of parking spaces, etc., contribute to a rise in the city’s noise level. As a result, the residents of the city are significantly exposed to excessive noise levels.
