Abstract
In the present study, an effort has been made to find the effect of air pollution and roadside dust on some biochemical parameters from the selected ten tree species and to judge these parameters as markers for plant impairment. The study area of the present investigation comprised two representative roads located in the heart of Pune, namely Fergusson College road and Jangali Maharaj road. The lowest decrease in polyphenoel content was observed in Delonix regia (69.47%), while its content was observed to increase considerably in Polyalthia longifolia (85.06%), growing in the polluted area. The soluble sugar content of the leaves increased considerably in all the tree species. The lowest proline content was observed in Ficus religiosa (41.09%), while it increased considerably in Albizia saman (251.64%), growing in the polluted area. The higher zinc content from the dust was observed at the Garaware circle. Lead and nickel showed higher values in the dust. Results revealed that air pollution is damaging the roadside trees.
